Blog Post #1

My name is Garrett Pyke and I am a junior here at UAF majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in finance. I am originally from Toronto, Ontario, and chose to study here since they had a business program that intrigued me as well as the hockey team which I play for here at UAF. Outside of hockey, my hobbies include fashion, health, cooking, and quality time with family and friends. In regards to art, I have always shown a passion for art pieces and enjoy reviewing art pieces. I am excited to go into this class since the last art class that I was enrolled in was in high school which was a few years back. I hope to get a deeper understanding of how artworks and be able to understand different art pieces better after this course.

The art piece shown above is a great representation of my childhood since hockey was my first true love. As a young kid growing up in Toronto where the winters were very cold my friends and I would often play on backyard rinks made by our parents. It was here where I fell in love with the game and would imagine myself one day becoming a professional. Similar to the kid shown in the art piece I would also pretend that I had a large crowd watching over me when in reality there was no one.

I have a love for art and this past summer I found myself walking through art displays at Grandville Island. I found a sculpture of a lion with which I created a connection instantly. The lion was sculpted in Kenya and was later transported to the art gallery where it has been on display for over 2 years now. I now associate this ion with good luck and have told myself that if I ever encounter great wealth hat this would be my first purchase. In the future I see myself attending art workshops and art shows.

  1. That video gives you an appreciation of the time and skill required to create such a detailed photorealistic work. I would love to visit Toronto. I have a music student there, and I have several who join me on my Friday night events that I do on my ukulele. They have had some wicked hot weather this summer.

  2. Hello Garrett,

We have a common interest in our hobby cooking and I can see similarities in plating a dish with art and that is something I have focused more on recently, because you eat with your eye as well.

I am interested in learning more from each other this semester and I like what you said about the lion. Personally, I see lion as my spirit animal and it was really cool that you found this instant connection with this piece of art work.

    Good luck this semester Garrett.

  3. Hi Garrett,

Just like you, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I also have not taken any arts classes since high school and this is my first arts class that I am taking in a while, but I am excited to learn more. I enjoy the art piece you posted because just like you when growing up I was dreaming of having a big crowd watching me play sports. Great post!

  4. Hi Garrett,

It is awesome that you can find an instant connection with an arts piece of as a majestic creature as a lion. It seems like a really prestigious art piece. I too like attending certain art events and hope someday I will be able to purchase high class art myself.

Hope this will be a great semester for you!
