Exploring the Romantic Era

Image
Romantic Era     What makes art so unique is how everyone has different thoughts and ideas on what art is to them and what they enjoy. Exploring art is a very personal activity as your perception of a piece and the emotions you get from it are very different than what any other individual will experience. Since exploring paintings from the romantic era it was obvious to me that the romantic style was something which I gravitated towards. The backgrounds of these paintings often being scenic outdoor settings appeal to my likes in an art piece.    Hudson River School          The Hudson River School was a mid-19th-century American art movement that often displayed landscaped style paintings based off of the aesthetic vision from the romantic era.      The first piece displayed was created by Frederic Edwin Church in the year 1856. Church first sketch out this painting during an adventure through South America which sa...

Classical Blog Painting Description      The oil painting shown above was created by Jean-Honore Fragonard during the 18th century between 1767 and 1768 in the Wallace Collection in London. The painting is often referred to as "The Happy Accidents of The Swing". Connection       These paintings of the classical era were often seen as playful and light as often following the template of Rococo style artwork. During this time frame, the morals of an art piece weren't what drove the painters and viewers but rather the visual pleasure which the piece gave off was the goal. These paintings were meant to inspire individuals to have good morals and were not pushing the boundaries of what society found acceptable. Many people of this time especially the middle class found these works to be a moral decline for the middle class.  Analysis       In this oil painting, we can see the obvious of a woman on a swing while surrounded by ...

Baroque Blog Overview      This painting by Artemisia Gentileschi is known as Judith Beheading Holofernes and is not easily forgotten because of its graphic imagery. The painting was created while Artemisia was still a teenager being 18 or 19 years old and was completed in the year 1611-12. The exact location where the painting was created is unknown. The artist is known to have struggled personally having been raped by her mentor at the young age of 17. Perhaps this traumatizing life event that tragically took place is a reason why we see her work being violent towards men. Artemisia comes from a deep family of artists having her father Orazio Gentileschi be a successful baroque painter.  Analysis      The painting shows us a dramatic scene where two females look over a male getting his throat slashed graphically. This is a very powerful painting as shown because of the dark background and colors used. From this painting, it is obvious that the...

Renaissance Blog Overview     The art piece shared above is a famous painting known worldwide by artist Michelangelo. The piece is from the Italian Renaissance and ages back to the year 1512. It can be found forming part of the Sistine Chapel ceiling which is located in the Apostolic Palace, Vatican City. The Chapel is known for having numerous amounts of historical art pieces and is an important location by many around the world because of its beauty.      The detail in the painting inspires me especially the small details in the facial expressions and the body positioning. When looking at the facial expressions I see the importance in both Men's faces while touching hands and the importance of this moment. Also, the body positioning of both men shows beauty and relaxation which gives off a sense of comfort. From a quick glance, it is obvious that there is a connection in touch between humans and the fingers connecting show that powerful moment, what may...

My name is Garrett Pyke and I am a junior here at UAF majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in finance. I am originally from Toronto, Ontario, and chose to study here since they had a business program that intrigued me as well as the hockey team which I play for here at UAF. Outside of hockey, my hobbies include fashion, health, cooking, and quality time with family and friends. In regards to art, I have always shown a passion for art pieces and enjoy reviewing art pieces. I am excited to go into this class since the last art class that I was enrolled in was in high school which was a few years back. I hope to get a deeper understanding of how artworks and be able to understand different art pieces better after this course.      The art piece shown above is a great representation of my childhood since hockey was my first true love. As a young kid growing up in Toronto where the winters were very cold my friends and I would often pla...
